THE DREAM OF FREEDOM

After sleeping a few hours, I wake up with the sun strongly hitting my window. I go to the Caldron to say goodbye to everyone. At the main patio, I find Paulinho and Chiquito who are watching the soccer match between the teams of Rocinha and the inmates of Cândido Mendes. The first half ends tied one to one. In the interval, we exchange strong hugs. Together with this farewell, there is a sadness.

Paulinho then invites me to make a photo-documentary at the favela of Rocinha. He wants people to know that, contrary to what society imagines, a lot of happiness exists in his community. Like this, our plans retain the possibility of him working together with me again as my assistant and guide. This time, however, we will meet in freedom.

On April 2nd of 1994, eight months following my witness and after 53 years of operation, the entire prison population of Ilha Grande was transferred to the penitentiary of Vicente de Piragibe, at the city of Rio de Janeiro, and the Devil's Caldron was demolished.
