Richard Wutz, a 38-year-old mechanical engineer from Karlsbad, took a vacation in Spain 14 years ago. He returned a year later, as a chalk artist. "I saw an artist working on the streets of Seville. I thought that was nice, so I just stayed," said Wutz, adding he had everything he needed at the time - a tent and a sleeping bag. "If I hadn't decided to stay, I would have gone back home and always dreamed." Wutz supports a family by traveling around Germany, drawing images on pavement in front of cathedrals and museums. He makes from 13 to 200 DM a day from admiring passersby. He likes his work. "You can stay free. Before I used to go to work in the morning and everything was preprogrammed. Now I just get up in the morning, and I'm free."
