We would like to invite you to get in touch with us during this continuing experiment in online photojournalism here at FocalPoint f/8.

During The Russian Chronicles, we enjoyed receiving hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of email letters from around the world. Your encouragement, enthusiasm, support and curiosity are the things that make these jouneys possible.

Although we'll only be in Cologne these few short days, September 18th through the 23rd, we welcome your questions and feedback while we're here.

We'd also encourage you to think what you might like to ask one of the Germans we encounter during our days on the streets of Cologne, or perhaps one of the over 150,000 visitors and photo professionals that will attend Photokina this year.

Here's some of the mail we've received:

Dear Sirs,

I am enjoying your vivid report from Photokina. Because of my another business, I can't visit Photokina this year. So, I am really looking forward to your report from Cologne. If available, I would like to get any news at Hall 13. I am a manufacturer for professional electronic flash. I will highly appreciate it if you would kindly report from Hall 13.
Best Regards,

Mike Hara

Dear Mike:

We're delighted that you've "virtually" joined our brief visit to Cologne, and I certainly hope that Joe will be able to get by Hall 13 while we're here.

FocalPoint f/8's team of four here in Cologne is made up of Sigi Torinus, our logos designer and right hand here in Cologne; Suzanne Nelson, who is doing the writing you'll be reading throughout our stay; Gary Matoso, our photographer from Contact Press Images; and myself, Tripp Mikich, Project Director. Our team back home at FocalPoint f/8's San Francisco headquarters is Brittan Blasdel, in charge of keeping all of us sane and Jennifer Loomis, Web Mistress for this project.

We're also joined by Joseph Meehan of Photo District News, our correspondent inside of Photokina.

Hope you enjoy our visit!
Tripp

Subject: Covered distances
Just out of curiosity; how many miles a day do you have to walk in order to cover all these new marvels?? And, do you get reimbursed by the mile, or by product covered??

I know, it has nothing to do with the exhibit, but I thought it was a nice human touch to this "being there" web page.

Best regards,

M6G

Dear M6G

You just missed him. He just called from the press room at Photokina with his latest report.

Actually, Joe does this out of love of the art. PDN tried to pay him, but he refused. What a mensch, eh? (;-)

Subject: Street scenes
Tripp, I am interested in "street scenes" of various types.
Besides photography, motorcycles are a passion of mine.
I'd be interested in seeing individual bikes at speed or
bikes in groups in front of a coffee shop or bar.
Check out one of my "bikes" at

http://home.eznet.net/~gearhead
Regards,
Phil Dear Phil:

You can see from today's story, The Belgium Quarter, that we've gone and done just that, although we didn't get the bikes you asked for. There's a fair amount of bicycle traffic in Cologne, especially outside of the immediate city center. In the downtown, and throughout the neighborhoods, there are a lot of skateboarders and inline skaters, mostly younger people using the steps and benches for their stunts, and every now and then a blader on the streets.

As for motorcycles, in the land of the BMW, we've not seen too many on the streets, although most blocks have at least a few parked outside the buildings.

Will check out your homepage. Thanks for writing, and hope you're enjoying the trip.

Could we have some photographs showing the crowds sightseeing
at the numerous beer festivals in the smaller towns near to
Koln. Dinslaken for example. Best wishes
Dear KP:
We'd love to take a break and visit a beer festival. In fact, I could use one right now. But our schedule probably won't allow us to get much out of Cologne.
We are tentatively trying to visit a friend of Sigi's who lives in a castle outside of Cologne, but the closest I can do for you is the world's most complete beer store, according to Guinness Book of World Records.

Joe,
Any new cameras in the "true" panoramic --moving film type w/slit
format. I'm interested in 120 types--I have a Hulcherama currently.

Phil

Love your information on Cologne, but the twin towers cannot possibly be 7,000 feet high (over a mile up) or are they !?!
Perhaps that might be their elevation above sea level, or maybe 700 feet...

Ed: Thanks for the copy edit catch. With our round-the-clock pace here, if spell check doesn't catch it, we might not either.

Our schedule begins early in the morning, when Gary, armed with the Kodak DCS EOS 3 Digital Camera, Suzanne Nelson, who is writing all the stories for Streettakes section and Interviews, and Sigi, our graphics designer, translator, and guide, all rolled into one, head out onto the streets.

They work all day until after dark, and then we return to the Von Werndorf living room here on Nussbaumstr. to download the pictures out of the camera into a Mac PPC 8500 where we edit and color correct. Meanwhile, Suzanne retires to a local cafe or the kitchen to weave the text, while the fax machine spits out Joe Meehan's report from the Photokina hall. Once we have all the pieces in hand, everyone goes back to there respective places they sleep around Cologne, and I work through till the morning to put the pieces together into what you see here.

It's a literally round the clock process, and providing our internet companions with fresh stories everyday has kept us busy! We rely on people like you to give us those corrections we may have missed. Thanks for your help!
