Our Day with Trudy at Photokina

Walfraud "Trudy" Torinus, 60, has visited the annual Photokina convention in Cologne since 1974. Every year it gets bigger and louder.

"Twenty years ago, we used to look at all the cameras and enlargers and darkroom equipment. We'd get little presents at every stand. Now, nothing is personal. You just walk and walk, and you don't have time to look at everything," said Trudy, wandering through packed hallways and computer-enhanced exhibits of PhotoKina '96 with her long-time friends Ingolf and Gisela von Wernsdorff.

But Trudy, a teacher and former newspaper photographer, isn't afraid of the digital era. She compares it to first seeing photography as a young girl in Germany, the process as mysterious then as it is now.
