September 29 - Chita

This afternoon we took a break to do an interview for a local Chita TV news program called "Express Informatsia". Surprisingly, very few people we meet have heard about the Internet and are amazed when we explain what we are doing. It is refreshing to speak to people who haven't been constantly bombarded with hype about the Information Superhighway -- or the OJ Simpson trial, for that matter.

The highlight of the interveiw was when the interviewer asked Lisa to sing for the camera. Our host, Sergei, evidently mentioned to Galina, the reporter, that Lisa had sung and played guitar the night before. Lisa, who in a past life had a short stint as a lounge singer in Japan--I kid you not--belted out a mean version of "House of the Rising Sun", while Sergei, Natasha and Galina listened with glowing admiration.

In the evening we eagerly gathered around the television. After a report on the mafia-style murder of two local businessman and a few other less-grim stories, Lisa and I appeared on the screen. The three-minute report showed shots of me editing photos on the computer while Lisa gave a brief technical overview about the project. Somehow all of my insightful answers to Galina's questions ended up on the cutting room floor. They closed with the soulful sounds of Lisa as the camera slowly zoomed out from her strumming fingers to reveal our favorite "Amerikanka" singing her heart out in Sergei and Natasha's little kitchen.

I told our sponsors they'd get great PR out of this project!
