October 23 - Novosibirsk

The show was canceled before it ever got started. Dima had second thoughts and backed out at the last minute. I tried to call him for hours in the afternoon but his line was constantly busy--he had taken the phone off of the hook. It wasn't until I got a hold of Grisha later that I learned that Dima had become uncomfortable with the idea and was afraid to tell me. Although I wasn't particularly surprised by the turn of events, I was disappointed.

We ended up meeting at the apartment of Valera, another friend of Grisha's. We sat around talking and watching ABBA videos, much to Lisa's delight.

Natasha is still following us for her story but has been plagued by a serious allergy to Grisha's and Valera's cats. She can only stay in a cat-inhabited apartment for about an hour before having to retreat outside. She reminds me of a deep-sea diver constantly checking her watch to monitor her air supply. We have all gotten used to her comings and goings by now.

We shared our cab back to the hotel with Grisha. On the way he told me that he had spoken to Valera and that the show might take place after all. Possibly tomorrow evening.
