November 14 - Moscow
As I mentioned before, this city has changed incredibly. The streets of
Moscow today bear little resemblance to the Moscow of only five years ago. Flashy
advertising is plastered everywhere, store windows are teaming with Western
merchandise. It is no longer unusual to see chic Muscovites dressed in the latest
fashions, toting celluar phones. Imported luxury cars fill the streets. Quite a
contrast from the austere Soviet days.
While European fashion and goods abound, Russia has particularly embraced
American culture and style. American films--usually the worst of the crop--
dominate television and theaters. American clothing, music and literature are
everywhere. After decades of being shut off from the West, wide-eyed Russians
rushed to grab any taste of America they could get when Gorbachev's Perestroika
opened up the floodgates to the West. Now that several years have passed and
people have had a chance to get used to the invasion of Americana, we wanted to
ask a few Russians how they felt about it.
Vladimir, Felix, Olga,
Yuri, and Dennis and Anton
all gave us their take on "Amerikanskaya Kultura".
November 15 - Moscow
Over the last couple of days the MD&C Pavlov story has come together and we are
ready to get out of town. In fact, we plan to leave Moscow tonight and upload
from St. Petersburg in the morning. Did I say St. Petersburg? Yes, I think I did!
