Viktor, 51

Nikolai Grigorievich, 67

Vladivostok

Nikolai:
"I remember when I first came to Vladivostok in1957. I was walking around the main square and smoking a cigarette. When I finished, I threw the butt on the ground, and right away, a policeman came up and grabbed me. 'What do you think you're doing?' he said. And charged me three rubles for littering. I never threw another cigarette butt on the ground after that. But now, people just throw their garbage all over the place! No one cares, and the police don't do anything. It's just a mess, everywhere!
Viktor:
"Before, everything was stable, orderly. Now everybody is a thief. Everybody does exactly what they want, and no one is keeping things in control."
Nikolai:
"I'll tell you: Life was better during the war than it is now. Even during the war it was better! Many terrible things happen during a war, but all the same, people knew how to act in those times. Don't go asking people out on the main square these questions, though. They won't tell you anything. They'll tell you life is wonderful, that things have never been better than now. They are afraid that there are ears behind and in front, listening to what they are saying. Out here, we'll tell you the truth."
Viktor:
"What are you going to use this for, anyway? You know, if this comes back around to us, it could be bad. We are not as free as you are in the West yet. What newspaper are you working for?"
Nikolai:
"Just don't tell them your last name, Vitya. Nothing will happen. Don't worry. But what do you need to take photographs for?"
