I would rather have things as they are now than as they were ten years ago. Before, everything was all set out for you: school, then Young Pioneers, then Komsomol, then study at whatever institute you were directed to, then into work. It was guaranteed, and so it was easy. But there was no choice, no opportunity.

I think it's more difficult to be young now than it was when I was growing up, as nothing is guaranteed for today's youth. But for those who are willing to work, and make their own way, it is possible to do well. My daughter is nine, and has studied English for three years already, so I think she will do well.

Things really can't get any worse than they are right now here. Most people are living in very difficult circumstances. There has to be an upswing sometime in the next couple of years. The first thing that needs to happen is that everyone needs to be made to comply with the laws of the country: the politicians, the businessmen, everybody.

None of the people who are running for president are any good. Maybe in the time before the elections someone will appear, but otherwise there is no one. But Boris Yeltsin will not be re-elected, in any case.
