I first realized I was gay when I was 16, and it was a long time before I figured out that I was not the only one who was like that. I didn't meet another gay person until I was 19, so for those three years I felt very alone. So when I read that Martina Navratilova was a lesbian, and open about it, I couldn't believe it. Here was somebody I had always admired as a tennis player and as a person, and she was a lesbian! Just knowing that made a very big difference for me.

I live with my mother, and only told her last spring that I am gay. I had thought she suspected, but it turned out it had never even occurred to her. She was very upset.

I want to be able to hold hands with my lover in public, to kiss her on the street if I feel like it. Basically, I want to be able to do anything a straight couple can do without getting stared at or beat up. In American cities, people can do that. When will Novosibirsk get to that point? Maybe in five years, maybe ten. Maybe never.
