Walking their dog
in the Amerkhan district

Anya:
I think that every nationality has a right to its own land. Let the Chechens secede from Russia, why not? If they want to have their own country, let them have it. Why do we have to send our Russian boys there to fight?

But really, to be honest, we don't think about the war in Chechnya these days. We don't watch the news about it anymore.

Sergei:
At first, it was a big issue; everybody was talking about it. I thought from the beginning that it was a bad idea. There's nothing good about war.

The fighting isn't going to change anything down there. Russia will finally pull out, and everything will be exactly as it was before all this started. There's no sense to it.

Anya:
The Chechens have never really been a part of Russia like the Tatars are. Their land is closer to the Caucasus, and they have always fought with Russians. Tatars have much closer relations with the Russians.

Sergei:
The Chechens and Tatars are totally different people, anyway. They have totally different temperaments. What is happening in Chechnya won't happen here.
