The worst thing about the war in Chechnya is that now we are all just used to it. At first, people were upset and concerned, watching television all the time to see how things were going. Now everybody is just indifferent.

We had a similar situation in Tatarstan two years ago, but ended up signing an agreement with the Russian government. Tatarstan became a republic, and received a number of guarantees, most importantly for credit and a certain percentage of profits on oil sold from our land. In turn, Russia got assurances that Tatarstan would remain a part of Russia, and that we would not form our own army or mint our own currency. The Chechens could have signed a similar agreement, but Dudayev didn't want to. He only wanted total independence.

This is not the first time that the Chechens have found themselves in this kind of situation. Their history is one of conflict. The Chechens are a proud people; they will fight to the end.
