In March of 1989, Mexican federal police assaulted an abortion clinic in Mexico City and imprisoned 14 women and the clinic's doctors and nurses. While being held in a clandestine jail, the police tortured the doctors in front of the women to frighten them. They were released, but the kidnapping and torture were denounced across Mexico. The case reached national attention, and resulted in demonstrations and rioting.
